the_gfr2: why not just paste and a heatsink?
Rth for paste and pads is not very good, you should be trying to use the least amount you can get away with
in a lot of those special cases shit isnt always going to work out
like, rigid mounting chipamps to both a mounted board and a heatsink can be problems
thin interfaces can get cut through easily if things are perfectly perpendicular, which is literally impossibly for something clamped into a rubber pad
and thick interfaces suck, thermal properties bad enough that it makes sense to just go with insulated tab packages and a dab of paste
